Electrical Engineer To Full-Time Travel Content Creator – Here Is the Rollercoaster Journey of William Tang

William Tang is a true inspiration to those who dream of leaving their corporate jobs behind to pursue their passions. The electrical engineer turned full-time travel content creator has come a long way since starting his travel blog, Going Awesome Places, a decade ago.

Growing up as the only child of a small family from China that immigrated to Canada in the early 80s, William had a challenging childhood. He moved around quite a bit, making new friends and adapting to different neighborhoods. Despite this,his parents worked hard to ensure he had everything he needed and gave him the kind of life they didn’t have.

Like many immigrant parents, William’s parents had high expectations from him. They wanted him to become a doctor, accountant, or engineer, and William obliged by attending the prestigious University of Waterloo for Electrical Engineering. He had good grades and plenty of co-op work experience, but something was amiss.

After working as a consultant at a software company for several years, William was burnt out and ready for a change. In 2012, he quit his job to travel around Asia that summer. Then, a friend suggested him to start a blog to document his travels. William had been an avid photographer for years and thought it would be a fun idea to tell stories and share his experiences through his camera’s lens. That night, he brainstormed names and eventually bought the domain for his blog.

Over the course of that summer, William traveled and blogged without any notion of what a good travel blog was or that others were doing it as well. He freely typed away his experiences and feelings while uploading his photos. It wasn’t until he returned to Toronto that he began to learn more about the travel blogging space and became obsessed with it. He joined Facebook groups, upped his technology, and joined meetups to improve his blog and understand the business of things.

Since then, Going Awesome Places has grown into one of the top travel blogs worldwide. William’s dedication and perseverance helped him power through the industry’s ups and downs to build a thriving business. He’s a member of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW), Travel Media Association of Canada (TMAC),  Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), and has won several awards.

William Tang’s journey from an electrical engineer to a full-time travel content creator inspires many. He has shown that it is possible to pursue your dreams, no matter how difficult they may seem. His love for travel and his passion for creating content have led him to a successful career in the travel industry. He is a testament to the power of following your dreams and working hard to make them a reality.
