With the operating room full of challenges, sometimes it is hard for you to have a better view of the operating region. In addition to the traditional operating overhead lights, you will need to use an additional light source that can be able to provide enough amount of illumination. One of the most popularly used light source today is the surgical headlight.

What is a surgical headlight?

A surgical headlight is a portable source of light that is worn by the operators on their head. They can either be mounted on the carrier frame of the surgical loupes or attached to a wrap around the head strap, to the frame of your eyeglasses or to a surgical protective shield.

A surgical headlight is powered by a rechargeable battery. The bulb is usually made from a light emitting diode or LED.

Advantages of surgical headlight

Surgical headlights offer more benefits than any other operating light sources. Among these major benefits are as follows:

Portability

Surgical headlights are very portable. It allows you more freedom of movement than a typical overhead lamp. Since they are worn on the head, you can be able to move around from one station to another without the need to manually adjust the direction of the light.

Because it is relatively small and portable, a surgical headlight does not require huge space for storage. It does not also consume much space in the operating room.

Economical

Surgical headlights are powered by a rechargeable battery. Depending on the type and capacity of the battery used, you can be able to use the headlight for up to 17 hours per recharge. Since recharging the battery requires only a small amount of energy, you can be able to cut down your electric energy consumption.

Also, the LED bulbs last longer than the light bulbs used in the overhead lamp. This only means that you do not need to replace the bulbs as often as you do with the overhead operating lamp.

Ease of use

Surgical headlights are easy to use. You just have to attach them to a frame, turn them on and you are good to go. Adjusting the direction of the light is also pretty easy. To adjust the light angle, you will have to move your head towards your desired direction. You do not need to manually adjust it from time to time just like you usually do with an overhead lamp. This allows you to focus more on what you are working on without manual light adjustment interruptions in between.

Stable and shadow free illumination

The problem with overhead operating lights is that they tend to cast a shadow on the operating field. It can either be a shadow of the operator’s head or of the surgical instrument. The good thing about surgical headlights is that it provides shadow free illumination. Since it’s mounted on the head, there is no way it can cast a shadow of the head or body part of the operator.

Surgical headlights also provide stable and uniform illumination, something that you cant always have when using overhead lamps. The problem of some overhead lamps is that they tend to produce an illumination that is ultrabright at the center but dull on the edges. This can cause color distortion on the lighted operating field. High-quality surgical headlights, on the other end, can be able to produce stable light that has uniform brightness all throughout the illuminated field.
